Hillshire Brands Roof Terrace
Hillshire Brands, Perkins + Will
Hillshire Brands is a leader in “meat-centric” food solutions for the retail and food service markets, and generates nearly $4 billion in annual sales. In 2012 Hillshire Brands fully renovated an existing office building with anticipation of a future rooftop terrace. In early 2013 Wolff Landscape Architecture, Inc. was retained to design the rooftop areas, in conjunction with the architects Perkins + Will.
The roof terraces were conceived as places for employees to relax and refocus; for formal and informal meetings; and for departmental and corporate gatherings. The landscape architect developed terrace designs on the north roof and the south roof, and developed alternative designs for both areas with increasing levels of complexity, varying maintenance requirements, and different levels of construction cost, which gave the client the tools to be able to select a scheme suited to the desired use, budget, and maintenance abilities.
The preferred design utilizes only the north roof, accommodates all of the client’s uses and program, and fits within their budget. The roof terrace includes an outdoor kitchen with a communal harvest table as well as two-top and four-top tables. A fire pit with seating is located on the terrace perimeter, sited with outstanding views of the Chicago skyline. Two overhead structures have tables and chairs suitable for conferences, meetings, or more informal discussions. Roof terrace circulation is on ipe wood decking and precast concrete pavers supported on a pedestal system that protects the waterproofing membrane, minimizes penetrations, remains level, and is permeable, eliminating the need drains and sloped paving. Pathway layout also facilitates and encourages chance encounters between employees who are otherwise separated by space planning or corporate organization. The $1 million budget roof terrace started construction in late 2013, and was completed in the spring of 2014.
