Primary and Secondary Education
Primary and secondary school facilities are more than just buildings. School grounds have the potential to be outdoor playgrounds, increasingly important in an era where childhood obesity is a growing and alarming public health problem. School grounds can also be study areas for botany, agriculture, ecology, and introduce children and students to the wonders of nature and the outdoors. In addition to serving the school community, school grounds can also serve the broader community with playgrounds and other facilities. When families and residents of adjacent neighborhoods use the school grounds and facilities, the school is woven more tightly into the fabric of the community.
Wolff Landscape Architecture, Inc. designs school grounds to meet the owner’s goals and program for play areas, playgrounds, athletic facilities, gardens, parking, and service. Our services in primary and secondary education have included both new construction as well as renovation. We are sensitive to the constraints of budget, project schedule, safety and security, and accessibility.
Examples of school grounds that serve the community and the school include the Lake View Campus Park, which invites pre-school and older children onto the site to use the playground, and the King-Price Campus Park, where an outdoor performance venue is a focus of the local community. In both cases this approach invites children, parents, and neighbors to become familiar with the school’s site, staff, and students.
